Printed Electrodes for the Diagnosis of Viral Infections
By Subhrojeet Singha Roy — June 12, 2025

Printed electrochemical sensors offer a fast, low-cost solution for detecting viruses like COVID-19, HIV, and dengue. Unlike traditional lab-based tests, they deliver results within minutes and require no complex equipment.
A tiny drop of the sample is added to a screen-printed electrode connected to a handheld analyzer. The electrode surface is coated with biomolecules that recognize virus-specific markers. If the virus is present, a reaction occurs, creating an electrical signal that's instantly read by the device.
These sensors also support research by enabling quick testing of new materials, validating prototypes, and improving performance. As used in Alphaion’s development phases, they accelerate sensor innovation from lab to field.
This technology makes diagnostics more accessible, especially in remote areas. It enhances early detection, speeds up outbreak response, and strengthens global pandemic preparedness.
