Screen-Printed Electrodes (SPEs) in Agriculture

Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) are advancing agricultural technology by powering sophisticated sensing systems that characterize critical parameters, such as soil pH, nutrient concentrations, and hazardous pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, pesticide residues). These sensor systems are lightweight, low-cost, and can perform real-time, on-site measurements to provide instantaneous information to farmers, leading to knowledge and subsequently better decisions for growing nutrient-dense food, maximizing crop yield, and increasing profits in sustainable farming.

SPE-based sensors could identify nutrient deficiencies in soil before the reduction in growth occurs for precision fertilization practice for efficient input use, resulting in minimized waste and reduced environmental pollution.

Applications of SPEs in Agriculture

Soil Testing - Tests monitor important soil properties, such as pH and nutrient balance, for nutrient application and soil management.

Water Quality Testing - Identifies cheap measures to determine contamination from pollutants and assess the quality of water for irrigation practices.

Fertilizer Testing - Evaluates nutrient content and performance of fertilizers.

Plant Health Monitoring - Measures plant stress levels to assist in the timely identification of abnormalities, such as pest infestations or pathogens, or the treatment process.

Testing of Pesticide Residues - Identifies harmful chemical or pesticide residues existing within the crop.

Testing for Pathogens - Identifies the presence of bacterial, viral, or fungal pathogens and other threats to help mitigate damage quickly.

The Pathway Ahead

As modern agriculture faces resource limits, climate risks, and a need for sustainable paradigms, SPE-powered electrochemical sensors have potential pathways forward. They are becoming increasingly smarter, sensitive, and cheaper through innovation, placing them in the centre of data-driven and precision farming.

Conclusion

Screen-printed electrodes are not simply improving agriculture efficiency, they are revolutionizing technology in farming. They are transforming data into action, while also making precision agriculture possible and more sustainable, positioning a greener and smarter future for food production globally.
